Politically Charged Drama Neva Begins Run at the Public Theater

Guillermo Calderon’s haunting drama Neva begins its English language premiere at the Public Theater on March 1, with opening night set for March 11. The production is scheduled to run through March 31.

Directed by Calderon and featuring a new translation by Andrea Thome, Neva is the story of Anton Chekhov’s widow, a Russian actress who arrives at a rehearsal in St. Petersburg in the winter of 1905. As she waits with two other actors, they muse about love and their art, while the rest of the city faces terror from the tsarist regime gunning down striking workers in the streets.

Bianca Amato (Arcadia), Luke Robertson and Quincy Tyler-Bernstine (In The Next Room...) star in the three-hander. Neva is the second show in the Public’s spring 2013 season, alongside Detroit ‘67 and the forthcoming Old-Fashioned Prostitutes (A True Romance), the Fatboy Slim/David Byrne tuner Here Lies Love and the new musical Venice.
